D3.3: Report on Workflow for Next Generation ESMs with outlook for Digital Twins

About this document This report describes the recommended workflow for the Next Generation ESMs (experiment setup -> simulation -> output ->analysis), based on the lessons learned from Hackathons in the Development and Application Phases. Work package in charge WP3 Executive summary This report outlines workflows of the Horizon 2020 project nextGEMS that have proven successful and that have the potential to be useful for the Digital Twins. Digital Twins, as exemplified by the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, are high-resolution, continuously updated digital replicas of the Earth system that support advanced climate prediction and scenario analysis. The main improvement regarding workflows was achieved in the main setup and data provision, together with many small additions to make everything work fine in the end. The report lays down which key parts improved the workflows most and how they were achieved. There are furthermore examples given, how data provision works and examples how easy it became to work with large amounts of climate data across two common Earth system models (ESM). The central ideas are outlined in section 1.1.
