Fintech and the Evolution of Microfinance Institutions
Abstract The integration of financial technology (fintech) into microfinance institutions (MFIs) represents a pivotal transformation in financial inclusion efforts, addressing operational inefficiencies, scalability challenges, and the high costs associated with traditional microfinance models. This paper explores the historical evolution of MFIs, their objectives, and limitations, alongside key fintech innovations such as mobile banking, AI-driven credit scoring, blockchain technology, and digital payment platforms. Through case studies, it demonstrates how fintech has expanded geographical reach, enhanced client demographics, and improved financial literacy. The analysis highlights fintech's socio-economic implications, including client empowerment, poverty alleviation, and community development. Furthermore, it examines the barriers to fintech adoption, including regulatory, infrastructural, and cultural challenges, while underscoring the enablers that drive successful integration. The findings suggest that fintech-MFI convergence offers a sustainable path for fostering financial inclusion and socio-economic development globally.
