Biological and Poly phenolic Insights into Phyllanthus niruri L. from the Himalayan Region of Himachal Pradesh

ABSTRACT Phyllanthus niruri L., commonly known as Stone breaker, is a traditional medicinal plant being utilized for the healing of various ailments. The study aims to evaluate phytochemical content (TPC and TFC) along with antioxidant and antimicrobial potentials of P. niruri leaf extracts gathered from the different altitudinal regions of Himachal Pradesh. The plant from Sirmour region (2500-3000 masl) exhibited highest levels of TPC and TFC determined by spectrophotometric methods. Additionally, P. niruri leaf extract exhibited higher antioxidant potential by DPPH assay as compared to ABTS assay. Further, antimicrobial activity was also evaluated and P. niruri from Sirmour region exhibited maximum zone of inhibition against Staphylococcus aureus in comparison with the other locations undertaken. The findings, thus, emphasizes on the objective to investigate the correlation among phytochemical contents, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities on P. niruri leaf extracts collected from various altitudinal regions of Himachal Pradesh Himalayas.
