Advancing Futures Studies: A Mixed-Methods Approach to Identifying and Addressing Critical Research Gaps
This study identifies current research gaps within the field of futures studies. It aims to clarify research priorities and direct scholarly attention toward underexplored areas. By identifying these gaps, the study seeks to inform the global foresight community and support the advancement and practical relevance of the discipline. Through a mixed-methods design, the research integrates a comprehensive literature review with survey data collected from 215 foresight professionals and futures researchers. The analysis uncovers notable deficiencies in theoretical frameworks, methodological development, contextual applications, and emerging domains. The most pronounced gaps exist in contextual and emerging areas. Survey participants ranked methodological rigidity, technology and data analytics gaps, and participatory engagement gaps as the most urgent areas for further inquiry. The findings highlight the necessity of inclusive and participatory approaches in futures studies. Concrete recommendations are proposed, such as enhancing methodological rigor, embracing diverse viewpoints, and utilizing new technologies. This work establishes a foundation for subsequent investigations and aims to support the ongoing evolution of the field.
