Bridging the gap between open distance learning and academic integrity in a South African university.
Online Distance Learning (ODL) has emerged as an effectivesystem, decentralising access to higher education for individuals andcommunities that would otherwise face barriers to university enrolmentowing to different impeding factors. However, the credibility and standingof higher education institutions is dependent on its ability to comply withacademic integrity standards. Online distance learning, though brimmingwith transformative potential, faces critical challenges in safeguardingacademic integrity. Its virtual nature creates heightened susceptibility toplagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty, underscoring thepressing need for innovative monitoring and enforcement mechanisms touphold ethical standards. The study aims to explore and develop effectivestrategies for bridging the gap between open distance learning andacademic integrity in a South African university, focusing on identifyingchallenges, understanding contributing factors, and proposing innovativesolutions to promote ethical academic practices in virtual learningenvironments. The study utilized Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB)as its framework, focusing on how attitudes, subjective norms, andperceived behavioral control influence students' ethical decision-making inopen distance learning. TPB provided a structured approach to examine thepsychological and social factors affecting academic integrity, aligning withthe study's aim to address challenges and foster ethical practices in virtualeducation. Employing an empirical research design, the study targeted 15lectures in the Faculty of Management Sciences, particularly thedepartment of Public Management, Law and Economics for in-depthinterviews. Data was analysed using thematic content analysis. The findingshighlight that while ODL offers unparalleled opportunities for expandingaccess to education, it also introduces vulnerabilities that threatenacademic honesty. The study concludes by recommending a multifaceted approach, including comprehensive training and development for studentsand staff, the adoption of advanced technological tools to detect and deterplagiarism, and the introduction of policies to monitor and evaluateacademic practices. Moreover, the research proposes a practical model tobridge the gap between ODL and academic integrity, ensuring that theevolution of higher education maintains the highest standards of ethicalscholarship. The value of this study lies in its innovative model, which notonly safeguards academic integrity but also reinforces the potential of ODLto deliver quality education that is both accessible and accountable.
