British Sense of Humor as a Secret Code: Will You Be Accepted into the Club?
This article explores British humor as a unique cultural code and subtle social filter, examining its linguistic features—such as irony, sarcasm, understatement, and self-deprecation—and its historical roots. Through content analysis and a small-scale field study involving native speakers and advanced English learners, it investigates how humor comprehension varies depending on linguistic proficiency and cultural familiarity. The findings support the hypothesis that British humor functions not merely as entertainment, but as an intellectual key to inclusion within an insider cultural circle.
