DESIGN AND IMPLEMENTATION OF LINEAGE IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM IN BUGANDA KINGDOM, CENTRAL UGANDA

Buganda's lineage system is central to its culture. A clan represents a group of people who can trace their lineage to a common ancestor in some distant past. In the customs of Buganda, lineage is passed down along matrilineal lines. The clan essentially forms a large extended family and all members of a given clan regard each other as brothers and sisters regardless of how far removed from one another in terms of actual blood ties. Many young people do not know about their cultures, clans, clan leaders, Totem, headquarters of their clans, clan members and their contacts in short people in Buganda don’t know their lineage (okulanya). There has been very little work directed towards lineage identification and the Buganda origin story is more of a myth than reality and even the clan system. This has caused many problems like same clan and family marriage, loss of land and properties, inherited diseases and others. Design and implementation of a lineage identification system may help Buganda people to identify their lineage and know their roots. This study designed the lineage identification system for Buganda kingdom using asp.net(c#) for front end and mysql database for backend. After the system was tested on Buganda people to see whether it can help to identify their lineage. The sample of 36 clan members of mpindi, 36 clan members of fumbe,2 clan leaders(mpindi,fumbe),10 sub clan(siga) leaders of fumbe,10 sub clan(siga) leaders and 1 system administrator using homogenous and purposive sampling technique was used. The system was tested and validated using interviews from Buganda people to get responses. The interview comprised of questions which was arranged to clan members (mpindi and fumbe), clan leaders (mpindi and fumbe), sub clan (siga) members and clan administrators from Buganda kingdom. The findings were later analyzed in NVivo qualitative analysis software to check whether the system is valid for lineage identification in Buganda the study found that all respondents had positive attitude towards the system which implied that lineage identification system is capable of identifying lineage in Buganda kingdom. It also indicates that Buganda clan leaders, members and sub lineage leaders are capable of using the system

Abstract

Buganda's lineage system is central to its culture. A clan represents a group of people who can trace their lineage to a common ancestor in some distant past. In the customs of Buganda, lineage is passed down along matrilineal lines. The clan essentially forms a large extended family and all members of a given clan regard each other as brothers and sisters regardless of how far removed from one another in terms of actual blood ties. There has been very little work directed towards lineage identification and the Buganda origin story is more of a myth than reality and even the clan system. This has caused many problems like same clan and family marriage, loss of land and properties, inherited diseases and others.
