EFFECTS OF RETINOID USAGE AND MALADAPTIVE SOCIAL-MEDIA 'SKINCARE' ON THE PREPUBESCENT AND ADOLESCENT
The rise in social media usage among minors has led a considerable portion of Generation Alpha—predominantly young girls—to adopt intensive skincare routines originally designed for adult women. Among these products are retinoids, vitamin A-derived compounds commonly used in anti-aging treatments, which are often applied inappropriately to young skin. This paper examines the dermatological consequences of early retinoid use, including potential irritation, barrier damage, and long-term sensitivity, while also analyzing the social dynamics—particularly online beauty culture—that drive this trend. As unregulated skincare advice becomes increasingly accessible, this issue poses growing concerns for dermatologists and parents alike. The findings emphasize the urgent need for age-appropriate skincare education and stricter content moderation across digital platforms.
