APPLICATION OF PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION: ITS ROLE IN IMPROVING STUDENTS' MOTIVATION AND PRONUNCIATION SKILLS AT MINDANAO STATE UNIVERSITY-SULU

In this study, the use of phonetic transcription was correlated with the motivation and pronouncing skills of students whose language was English as a Second Language (ESL) at Mindanao State University-Sulu. The researcher worked through a quasi-experimental design which had a control group and an experimental group. The experimental group was taught phonetic transcription while the control group was taught the traditional way of pronouncing words. Data were collected on students’ pre- and post-tests of motivation and performance tests of pronunciation. The results were interpreted in such a way that the experimental group achieved greater motivational and performance related scores in pronunciation accuracy compared with the control group. The findings indicate that phonetic transcription should be adopted as it enhances the motivation of ESL students and their pronouncing abilities.
