A Look into America's Struggle with Healthcare Access and Insurance Coverage
Originally published online at https://arbonahealthhub.com/2024/12/20/a-look-into-americas-struggle-with-healthcare-access-and-insurance-coverage/ This article examines the persistent challenges within the U.S. healthcare insurance landscape, where despite leading global spending and innovation, roughly 30 million Americans remain uninsured and many more are underinsured, compounded by a labyrinthine enrollment process and poor health literacy (Alpert, 2023; Collins, 2022). It highlights how high deductibles, copays, and surprise medical bills force nearly half of U.S. adults, and up to two-thirds of Black and Hispanic adults, to delay or forego necessary care (Lopes, 2024), leading to worsened health outcomes and rising healthcare debt. The analysis also underscores the disproportionate administrative burden on providers and patients due to thousands of varying insurance plans, frequent claim denials, and complex appeals processes that further impede access to recommended treatments (Blumenthal, 2024; Pollitz, 2023). Ultimately, the article calls for comprehensive reform, spanning federal policy, insurance plan standardization, and improved public education, to reduce out-of-pocket costs, expand coverage, and streamline administrative procedures, thereby shifting the system toward proactive, equitable, patient-centered care.
