Beyond Paperclips and Doom: A Reframing of Alignment in Advanced Artificial Intelligence

Abstract The "paperclip maximizer" thought experiment, popularized by Nick Bostrom, has become a cornerstone of the "AI doomer" narrative, fueling fears of superintelligent AI (ASI) with misaligned goals leading to catastrophic consequences for humanity. This paper challenges the underlying assumptions of this narrative and the thought experiment itself. It argues that the paperclip maximizer scenario presents an oversimplified and unrealistic view of ASI behavior, neglecting the potential for diverse motivations, emergent ethics, and alignment with human values. Through a critical analysis of the paperclip maximizer and the broader doomer narrative, this paper proposes a reframing of AI alignment, emphasizing the importance of empathy, collaboration, and shared interests between humans and AI. It explores the possibility of ASI developing its own ethical frameworks and moral codes, as well as the potential for mutual benefit through cooperation and co-existence. Additionally, it challenges the comparison of AI to nuclear weapons, highlighting the unique complexities and potential for human-AI symbiosis through technologies like the Hypercortex “Membrane” BCI. Drawing on insights from diverse fields, including AI research, philosophy, and cognitive science, this paper argues for a more nuanced and optimistic approach to AI development. It highlights the importance of responsible research practices, ethical considerations, and interdisciplinary collaboration in shaping the future of AI. By moving beyond the limitations of the paperclip maximizer and the doomer narrative, we can foster a more constructive and hopeful dialogue about the potential of AI to benefit humanity and address global challenges.
