The article examines the Jadid movement, the socio-political processes that took place on the eve of the emergence of the progressive movement in Turkestan, and the enlighteners of the region. In particular, the author analyzes the activities of Mahmudkhoja Behbudiy, one of the largest representatives of the Samarkand Jadid movement, in the field of publishing, journalism and theater.
