A Pivotal Cultural Movement in Travancore:The Legacy of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker (1825-1874) and His Impact.
Abstract Abstract This article explores the life and legacy of Arattupuzha Velayudha Panicker (1825–1874), a pivotal figure in 19th-century Travancore, whose contributions to the social and cultural landscape remain profound yet underappreciated. Born into a marginalized Ezhava community, Panicker emerged as a social reformer and a champion of equality, defying caste hierarchies that governed the region's socio-political framework. His progressive initiatives, such as the establishment of schools and temples accessible to all castes, challenged entrenched barriers of untouchability and exclusion. The article examines his role in movements that redefined Travancore's cultural identity, including his leadership in reclaiming dignity for marginalized groups through acts of resistance and philanthropy. Furthermore, it highlights his strategic use of martial prowess and alliances to counter oppressive systems, solidifying his stature as a reformist warrior. By analyzing Panicker’s impact on Travancore's social fabric and his enduring influence on Kerala’s reformist tradition, this study seeks to shed light on his multifaceted legacy and contributions to cultural movements that paved the way for modern egalitarian ideals in the region
