ASSESSMENT OF HOUSING SATISFACTION TOWARDS GOVERNMENT QUARTERS: A CASE STUDY OF SUNGAI BULOH PRISON QUARTERS

Forming a physically and spiritually healthy society begins with the place of residence. Therefore, an inclusive and safe housing environment is an important aspect that every country needs to pay attention to to ensure the community's wellbeing. However, several prison department quarters in Malaysia need attention due to the uncomfortable staff conditions. The atmosphere of the home should be comfortable, and they should be able to do good work. If they live in uncomfortable conditions, then it will give a bad impression. This study seeks to identify the correlation between external factors, internal factors, access to facilities, and neighborhood with housing satisfaction among Sungai Buloh prison quarters residents. One hundred eight household representatives were involved in this study, and respondents were selected through a systematic sampling. Data was gathered through a self-directed questionnaire. The study results showed external factors (i.e., water and electricity supply, safety and security of the house, the condition of the stairs and building, cleanliness, and maintenance services), internal factors (i.e., privacy, comfort, natural lighting, number of rooms, and thermal condition), access to facilities, and neighborhood significantly influenced housing satisfaction. Meanwhile, the results of multiple regression analysis showed that this model contributed 65.9%, which revealed that the independent variables influence housing satisfaction, which amounted to 65.9%. Moreover, the neighborhood is the most significant contributor to housing satisfaction among residents. Thus, neighborhood spirit needs to be cultivated to create a sense of solidarity among neighbors, where they care for each other, help, and collaborate for the common good. The results of this study have inferences for relevant parties such as the government, housing developers, individuals, and communities.
