A story about metadata

A Story of Metadata, presented to the Predicted Effector Gene (PEG) Working Group on July 9th 2025, uses Plato’s Allegory of the Cave to frame how ambiguous OMICs terminology distorts biological insight. The talk outlines a five‑pillar roadmap for sustainable metadata standards: domain‑driven specifications, machine‑readable schemas, open‑source tooling, formal governance, and community assets. A live example of the Federated EGA (FEGA) specification is used to illustrate how modular, versioned, and validated implementations can minimise (though never fully remove) informational distortion and unlock reproducible OMICs research.
