An Assessment of soft coral (Anthozoa: Octocorallia; Malacalcyonacea) species diversity and distribution from the Kavaratti atoll, Lakshadweep archipelago, Central Indian Ocean

This study aims to assess the diversity of soft corals in Kavaratti Atoll, addressing a gap in existing research. During this survey, 15 species across four families were documented: 11 Sarcophytidae, two Nephtheidae, one Sinulariidae, and one Cladiellidae. The distribution of different genera varies across various zones: the intertidal area, lagoon, inner reef slope, outer reef flat, and outer reef slope. Our results highlight the importance of an integrated taxonomic approach in the region. We also attempted to investigate the components of the reef system around Kavaratti Island, including hard coral diversity, live and dead coral cover, rubble, rock, sand, algae, soft coral, and other organisms. Proper management measures should be implemented to increase coral cover in the reef area and prevent further damage to the reef.
