Blockchain Technology in IT Services
The current paper conducts a detailed analysis of the ways blockchain technology is changing the IT services landscape. Using data from existing research, industry reports, and a variety of technology articles, the study seeks to explain what blockchain is and why it has become an important tool in many industries, particularly IT services. The paper highlights some of the potential meaningful advantages of blockchain: increased security, increased independence or autonomy, increased visibility or transparency, increased speed in transactions, and ultimately changes to the way IT services are provided and consumed. The study describes some specific areas where blockchain could be useful in the context of IT services, including online data storage solutions, data management processes, cloud computing, and development of software applications that provide secure, decentralized solutions. However, the study details a number of drawbacks to the use of blockchain technology within parts of the IT services industry. Most notably, scalability issues still plague blockchain technology as it generally is not able to manage and deal with bulky data or large volumes of data. Other drawbacks include lack of interoperability between systems, legal and regulatory uncertainty, and the unavailability of a competent workforce with the requisite skills to implement and operate blockchain-based services.
