The Gospel of SCUM: Valerie Solanas, the Lesbian-Eyed Oracle, and the Cultic Theater of Feminist Negativity in American Horror Story (2016)
Introduction: Enter the Phantom of SCUM When Valerie Solanas appears in American Horror Story: Cult (Episode 7, “Valerie Solanas Died for Your Sins: Scumbag”), it is not as a character but as a curse — a necropolitical phantom haunting the libidinal theater of 2017’s America and its cultic avatars. Her presence is not explanatory but apocalyptic: she does not clarify, she corrodes. Reanimated in the middle of Kai Anderson’s blue-haired boy-terrorist fantasia, Solanas returns not to “fix” feminism, but to bury it deeper — not to redeem women, but to implicate them further in the madness of historical violence. She is the disavowed mother of militant female rage, the apostate nun of misandric scripture, and the only character in Cult whose revolution is theological in form and metaphysical in intent. To take Solanas seriously is to take negativity seriously — the negativity of damaged women, of bad affects, of incoherent rage and anti-politics dressed in lipstick and gunpowder. In this essay, I will analyze her role in AHS: Cult not as feminist homage but as structural rupture. Solanas, in both her historical and fictional iterations, functions as the anti-Christ of liberal feminism and the unholy spirit of queer antisocial theory. Through her, the show interrogates and deconstructs the myth of woman-as-victim and replaces it with a far more unstable figure: woman as killer, woman as cultist, woman as symbolic virus.
