The Reception of Blessings According to Vinaya Principles
This article examines the act of receiving and giving blessings in Theravāda Buddhism through the lens of monastic discipline (Vinaya). While no formal blessing formulas are codified in the Tipiṭaka, common expressions such as “Āyu Vanno Sukhaṃ Balaṃ” have become widely accepted in Buddhist custom. The article highlights the importance of physical posture and context in Dhamma expression, particularly addressing cases where the monk’s elevated position (e.g., standing while the layperson is seated) may result in disciplinary offenses. Drawing from both canonical analysis and local moral practice, the article proposes ethically aligned practices in line with the Buddharaksa Community’s values, harmonizing Vinaya with living tradition.
