Towards a Cohesive Topos-Theoretic Framework for the Page-Wootters Mechanism
We propose a rigorous mathematical framework for the Page-Wootters mechanism of emergent time within the setting of cohesive (∞,1)-topos theory. This approach provides a natural language for the problem of time in quantum gravity by formally identifying the dis- tinction between the global, static ”view from eternity” and the local, dynamical perspective of an internal observer with the internal/external logic duality inherent to topos theory. We define a class of Page-Wootters systems within a presheaf topos over C*-algebras, where the Wheeler-DeWitt constraint is represented by a homotopy pullback. We demonstrate that the Schr¨odinger equation can be consistently reformulated as a flatness condition on a state bundle over the clock’s configuration space, where the temporal connection is identified with the system’s Hamiltonian via a central physical axiom. This work unifies the concepts of quantum entanglement, observer-dependent dynamics, and the timelessness of the universe within a single cohesive structure, offering a new path for investigating the foundations of time in quantum theory.
