Initiation Across LARDO's/LARF's: Emergent Initiatory Learning Policy
Abstract: This study explores the psycho-social experiences of learners at risk of dropping out (LARDOs) and learners at risk of failing (LARFs), focusing on patterns of absenteeism and classroom withdrawal. These behaviors often escalate due to limited intervention from parents, teachers, and the wider community. The consequences of LARDOs and LARFs include increased illiteracy and unemployment. Using a qualitative experiential approach, the research captures classroom observations from teachers who work directly with these learners. The study is framed using Müller’s three-part structure of initiation—Innocence, Experience, and Maturity—which offers insights into behavioral transitions. The findings inform the development of an emergent initiatory policy aimed at re-engaging at-risk students and guiding targeted interventions. Keywords: Initiation, LARDO, LARF, three-part structure of initiation, Innocence Level, Experience Level, maturity level, initiatory policy
