Responsibilities of port terminals in accidents with reach stackers: A multidisciplinary study

This study investigates the shared responsibilities of various sectors in port terminals regarding accidents involving Reach Stackers, large equipment critical for container handling. Using a hybrid methodology combining quantitative data analysis, technical consultations, and the GUT method (Gravity, Urgency, and Trend), the study prioritizes corrective actions across sectors such as Administration, Occupational Safety, Maintenance, Operations, and Infrastructure. The results highlight Maintenance and Occupational Safety as critical sectors, requiring immediate interventions to reduce the frequency and severity of accidents. The findings suggest that proactive maintenance, predictive technologies, and extensive operator training are key strategies to mitigate operational risks. The alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), reinforces the need for safer, more efficient port operations.
