Beyond the Threshold: Strategies for Increasing Women's Representation in Indian Art Galleries

Abstract: The article explores the underrepresentation of women artists in Indian art galleries, highlighting the complex interplay of historical legacies, socio-economic barriers, and systemic biases that create barriers for women artists. It examines the historical context, highlighting the limited access to training and opportunities faced by women within traditional systems of art education and patronage. Despite the shift towards inclusivity in the contemporary landscape, historical biases continue to influence gallery practices and artist selection. Market bias favours established artists, often dominated by men due to historical limitations on women’s artistic careers. Socio-economic barriers, including family responsibilities and access to financial resources, further disadvantage women in pursuing their artistic efforts. Unconscious curatorial practices and the challenges women face in self-promotion contribute to underrepresentation. The article proposes concrete strategies to achieve greater gender equality, such as active gallery initiatives, partnerships with women-focused collectives, and dedicated events showcasing their work. Programs designed to empower women artists through workshops on self-promotion, financial management, and career development can provide vital assistance. Art institutions play an important role in promoting change through research projects documenting women’s artistic contributions and exhibitions highlighting their work. Open debate and media attention on gender inequality in the art world are also presented as important drivers of progress. By acknowledging these historical and systemic issues and implementing the proposed strategies, Indian art galleries can create a more equitable environment, leading to a rich and diverse art world that reflects the full spectrum of artistic talent in India.
