Beyond Compliance: Fostering Internal Motivation and Professional Responsibility Among Teachers
Abstract: This study investigates the crucial role of school leadership in fostering internal motivation and professional responsibility among teachers, moving beyond traditional models focused solely on compliance and control. Grounded in self-determination theory, transformational leadership, and pedagogical leadership frameworks, the research examines how effective leadership behaviors can cultivate autonomy, competence, and relatedness—key psychological needs that sustain long-term motivation. Utilizing a systematic literature review of 40 peer-reviewed sources, the study identifies specific leadership strategies and organizational practices that enhance teacher engagement, promote professional growth, and support a collaborative school culture. Key findings highlight the importance of inclusive leadership, emotional and cultural responsiveness, trust-building, and shared decision-making in motivating educators. Furthermore, the research underscores how collaborative learning communities and a positive organizational climate contribute to teacher well-being and improved performance. The study offers critical insights for policymakers, educational leaders, and professional development programs aiming to build more empowered, resilient, and motivated teaching forces. By reimagining leadership beyond hierarchical control, the findings advocate for relational, reflective, and context-sensitive leadership models that align with both teacher needs and institutional goals.
