DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINED RELEASE CARVEDILOL TABLETS USING POLYMER-BASED MATRIX SYSTEMS

This study focuses on the development of sustained-release (SR) tablets of Carvedilol using a matrix system with swellable polymers. The formulation included Hydroxypropyl Methylcellulose (HPMC), Microcrystalline Cellulose (MCC), and Ethylcellulose (EC) to achieve a controlled release over 12 hours. Various SR formulations were prepared using the wet granulation technique and evaluated for physical, chemical, and stability characteristics. Results showed that the physical characteristics of the formulations were satisfactory, and tablets met the official monograph criteria for assay, weight variation, hardness, and thickness. The in vitro dissolution study indicated that the F6 formulation exhibited the desired release profile over 12 hours, complying with USP standards, particularly when the concentrations of HPMC, MCC, and EC were optimized. Additionally, the SR Carvedilol tablets demonstrated stability, making them a promising option to reduce dosing frequency and improve patient compliance.
