THE ROLE OF PRAGMATICS IN LANGUAGE, COMMUNICATION, AND HUMOR
Abstract: Pragmatics, a key branch of linguistics, explores how meaning is constructed in specific contexts beyond the literal interpretation of words and utterances. It examines the dynamic negotiation of meaning between speakers and listeners, considering the impact of social, cultural, and situational factors. This article delves into the foundations of pragmatics, its relationship with semantics and syntax, and its role in effective communication. A central focus is humor, which exemplifies the importance of pragmatic interpretation. By analyzing jokes and their reliance on context, speaker intention, and audience perception, this study highlights how humor aids in early cognitive and linguistic development. Furthermore, the article discusses the social and cultural dimensions of humor, emphasizing its role in fostering communication, mitigating misunderstandings, and strengthening interpersonal connections. Through a semiotic lens, humor is explored as a form of code violation that enriches human interaction. Ultimately, the study reinforces the significance of pragmatics in understanding language use in real-world contexts.
