Mindfulness Practices for Alleviating Pain from Musculoskeletal Disorders
Abstract Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, significantly affecting quality of life and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. While conventional treatments such as pharmacological and physical therapies remain essential, complementary approaches like mindfulness-based interventions have gained increasing attention. This review explores the application of mindfulness practices in the management of pain associated with MSDs. It discusses the nature and prevalence of MSDs, mechanisms of pain generation, and how mindfulness can modulate pain perception and improve psychosocial outcomes. We examine the evidence supporting mindfulness practices, including mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), mindfulness-based cognitive therapy (MBCT), and other mindfulness interventions. The review concludes with an analysis of future research directions, emphasizing the need for standardized protocols and long-term studies to establish efficacy and integration into routine care.
