Report of Adoption of Business Model and Distribution of Biochar in Accra

This report presents the Ghana case of the WIDER UPTAKE Project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme, which seeks to implement water-smart, circular economy solutions by producing biochar from wastewater sludge. As part of the Accra Case, biochar was produced as a renewable fuel alternative to wood-based charcoal, addressing Accra’s energy needs while promoting environmental sustainability. The report outlines the business model developed to support biochar distribution through the start-up distributor, targeting micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Accra. Trial feedback from potential users has been positive, highlighting strong market readiness for biochar. The model also includes recommendations for scaling production, expanding distribution channels, and securing regulatory support to enhance biochar’s adoption. This case illustrates the potential of biochar to contribute to Ghana’s sustainable energy transition, reduce deforestation, and foster economic growth.
