Analyzing the Urban Ecological Landscape: Language, Imagery, and Symbolism in Public Spaces in Lahore
This study investigates how public signs in Lahore convey ecological and consumer messages through language and images. It uses Linguistic Landscape Theory and Ecosophy as frameworks. Eight visual samples, including murals, billboards, and advertisements, were analyzed for their environmental content. Each sample had at least one ecological element and was gathered through field photography and online sources. The findings show a contrast between ecological messages that promote sustainability and shared responsibility, and consumer messages that focus on profit. This coexistence creates tension between long-term environmental goals and short-term business interests. Signs that include culturally relevant metaphors and inviting visuals were more effective in raising awareness. In contrast, other signs contributed to the commercialization of nature. By combining language and visual analysis, this study emphasizes the influence of public signage in shaping environmental beliefs and adds to the field of Ecolinguistics.
