The Mathematics of Hopfield Networks: From Neural Relationships to Memory Mechanisms
One of the most beautiful intersections I know of between linear algebra, neural computation, and memory systems is a beautiful mathematical framework that underlies Hopfield Networks. Now that we understand network architectures and neural dynamics in general, we move to the precise mathematical machinery we build upon to bring those architectures and dynamics to life. Image that a symphony orchestra where each musician (neuron) can influence every other musician (weighted connections). A musical response (output pattern) ensues, governed by a small set of constraints ultimately stabilising into a harmonious arrangement (stable state) dependent on the conductor's initial gesture (input pattern). The Hopfield networks' mathematical form of seeking coherent outcomes through an interacting set of components is in the essence of this analogy.
