RELEVANCE OF PEER TEACHING IN TEACHING PRACTICES AT HIGHER EDUCATION

Peer teaching, an instructional strategy where students teach and learn from each other, has gained prominence inhigher education due to its pedagogical and cognitive benefits. This article reviews existing literature on the relevanceof peer teaching in teaching practices at higher education institutions, examining its effectiveness, advantages, andchallenges. Peer teaching fosters active learning, enhances student engagement, and develops collaborative andleadership skills. Moreover, it aligns with constructivist learning theories emphasizing knowledge constructionthrough social interaction. Despite these benefits, challenges such as disparities in student competence, lack of formaltraining, and potential resistance from faculty persist. This review employs a qualitative approach, analyzingscholarly works and empirical studies to provide insights into the significance of peer teaching. The findings indicatethat peer teaching is highly beneficial, but its success depends on structured implementation and institutional support.Recommendations for improving peer teaching methodologies are discussed.
