Legal Regulation of Human Trafficking in Jordan
Human trafficking occurs every day and affects millions of men, women, and children worldwide. It is a major violation of human rights that threatens a person’s personal dignity and freedom. A global market exists for these individuals in different forms of exploitation, including commercial sex, forced labor, and involuntary domestic servitude. Given the complex nature of human trafficking and its cross-border aspects, a comprehensive examination of the regulatory response to human trafficking is necessary. In Jordan, trafficking in persons has emerged as a significant problem requiring monitoring and response. Despite shifts in the legal framework and government approach to addressing trafficking in persons, institutional and systemic obstacles and widespread migration persist. This essay examines Jordan’s legal regulation of human trafficking and its adequacy, including national and international efforts. Questions raised include whether Jordan, despite an appropriate legal framework, is immune to trafficking, whether the legal framework is adequate, and whether Jordan should adopt a more comprehensive approach to address this issue effectively.
