Formulation and Evaluation of Oral Dispersible Tablet of Almotriptan

Almotriptan malate is a triptan class anti-migraine drug with rapid action, highestbioavailability and low side effects. Fast dissolving tablets of almotriptan malate wereprepared by wet granulation technique using sodium starch glycolate, Crosscarmellosesodium and Crosspovidone (2%, 4%, and 6%), respectively, FT-IR spectroscopy anddifferential scanning calorimetry were used to investigate the physical characteristics ofthe drug. The granules were examined for angle of repose, bulk density, tapped density, index and Hausner's ratio. Developed tablets were evaluated for hardness, drug content, friability, wetting time, wetting absorption ratio, in vitro drug release and disintegrationtime. Formulation with 4% crosspovidone showed disintegration time of 21.5 sec. In vitrodissolution studies showed drug release of 94.66% after 12 minutes.
