The ancient dramatist of India is Basamagavi. He composed plays in the vernacular language. Kalidasa, the dramatist of the vernacular language, has compared and praised Basamagavi with the characters of Chaumillan and Kaviputra in his play Malavikagnimitram. The literary merit of Basamagavi has been pointed out in the epics mentioned in the vernacular literature. Panapatta, who belongs to the 7th century AD, has mentioned various special elements found in the plays of Basamagavi. Since the sloka style in the play Pratignayaukandarayanam written by Basamagavi is a style that preceded that of Kalidasa, it is said that Basamagavi was a predecessor of Kalidasa. Moreover, it is established by showing evidence that Prakrit words and dialogues are included in the play 'Sopana Vasavattha' written by him. The period of Basamaha Kavi is said to be the 3rd century AD. “Basha is considered one of the greatest Sanskrit dramatists. Next to Kalidasa, he predates Kalidasa and belongs to the 3rd or 4th century AD.” (Robert E. Goodwin.1998) The Buddhist playwright Asvakosara, who composed the Buddha Charitam, is also considered one of the first Sanskrit dramatists along with Basamaha Kavi. This study is about such an ancient northern language dramatist Basamaha Kavi.
