CEMETERY OF THE BROTHERHOODS: PRESERVATION OF MEMORY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE IN JAGUARÃO (RS)

This study focuses on the Cemitério das Irmandades, located in Jaguarão (RS), investigating it as a space of collective memory, cultural identity, and historical heritage. The main objective is to understand how the cemetery integrates material and symbolic elements to establish its cultural and touristic value, contributing to the preservation of local history and memory. The methodology is based on a qualitative approach with descriptive and exploratory characteristics. The procedures involved a bibliographic review on memory, identity, and cultural heritage, as well as direct observation of the tombs, monuments, and symbols present in the space. The analysis was conducted reflectively, linking theoretical concepts to the material and historical elements of the cemetery. The results indicate that the Cemitério das Irmandades has cultural and touristic potential, representing a historical landmark of Jaguarão/RS. However, it was observed that the site is not yet fully recognized as cultural heritage by the local community, highlighting the need for awareness and strategies to promote its appreciation and social appropriation. The study also reveals that the cemetery reflects the city's social, religious, and artistic transformations, establishing itself as a space of collective memory and cultural identity.
