Navigating The Start-Up Funding Landscape: Opportunities and Challenges of Venture Capital Firms In India, A Case Study of Peak XV Partners.
This research paper employs the case study methodology to present an in-depth examination of the involvement of Venture Capital (VC) firms, with a particular focus on Peak XV Partners, in the Indian start-up ecosystem. The study comprises a scrutiny of the investment trajectories and outcomes of five diverse start-ups, namely Go Mechanic, Zilingo, BharatPe, Trell, and Byju's. Each case highlights unique challenges and risks, ranging from governance lapses and financial mismanagement to regulatory shifts and market saturation, which have impacted the valuations and investment stakes of Peak XV Partners. The research paper also explores the measures undertaken by VC firms in response to these challenges, including regulatory changes such as the introduction of a 25% angel tax and the evolving focus on start-up profitability over growth. The study concludes by offering actionable insights and strategic recommendations aimed at enhancing due diligence, fortifying governance structures, and optimising investment portfolios. This research paper contributes to the extant literature on venture capital operations in emerging markets, specifically providing a nuanced understanding of the complexities faced by VCs in the high-risk, high-reward landscape of Indian start-ups.
