Conscience and Consciousness: Julian Barnes's The Noise of Time
The term conscience differs from the term consciousness. When the human mind receives and processes the information correctly is known as consciousness. It does so with the help of the five senses and the reasoning ability of the mind. The term conscience brings out the morality concept in humans. It helps to differentiate the good and bad. In the novel, The Noise of Time, Julian Barnes portrays the character of Dmitri Shostakovich, who faces a moral battle with himself. The novel also deals with the control of power over art. It takes place during the rule of Joseph Stalin in Russia, when one of Shostakovich"s operas had been banned after an article was published by the journal, Pravda. He loses all his name and fame.
