Study of the Effects of Levetiracetam in Experimental Model of Alzheimer's Disease

Aim: The aim of this study is to study the cognitive effects and memory skills of Levetiracetam in comparison with Donepezil in experimental model of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). Materials and Methods: The animals were divided into their respective groups of 6 mice each. Alzheimer’s Disease was induced by Aluminium Chloride (AlCl3) in male Wistar Rats in all groups. The assessment was done by three methods Morris Water Maze (MWM), Passive Avoidance and Y-Maze. Results were compared with the standard Donepezil. Statistical analysis was done by ANOVA followed by Dunnett’s multiple comparisons test and p <0.05 was considered significant. Results: In all the three behavioural assessment methods the results of Levetiracetam group were comparable to the results of Donepezil group (Day 30, Day 60 and Day 90). There was a significant improvement in Levetiracetam group when compared to AlCl3 group. Overall, Levetiracetam significantly improved the cognitive decline in the rats, showing its efficacy comparable to the standard drug Donepezil. Conclusion: In this study it was concluded that Levetiracetam showed Improvements in learning and memory, as demonstrated in the Morris Water Maze, Passive Avoidance, and Y-Maze tasks, showing that it has possibilities of becoming a promising agent for Alzheimer’s Disease.
