Critical Thinking in the Age of AI: Empowering EFL Students to Engage with Technology-Driven Learning

The study examines the intersection between artificial intelligence (AI) and critical thinking in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) education. The research focuses on exploring the value that AI based tools can add in improving EFL learners' analytical and reflective skills, given their increasing significance for academic success and lifelong learning. The study identified three key themes: the current state of critical thinking skills among EFL students, the capabilities of AI tools to help develop these skills, and the challenges/barriers in implementing these technologies effectively in EFL classrooms. Through an examination of existing literature and educational practice, the study identifies strategies for effectively empowering EFL learners through collaborative learning, inquiry-based activities and using AI tools to provide personalised feedback. Finally, it points to the need of growth mindset and strong argumentative skills for fostering critical thinking. Overall, the findings reflect the powerful potential of AI to enhance critical thinking of EFL learners and provide practical advice for educators to integrate AI technologies into language teaching.
