The Implementation Of Sustainable Education in a local Context : A Case Study in Indonesia
This research explores the implementation of sustainable education in Indonesia, highlighting the distinct challenges and opportunities presented within its local contexts. Due to Indonesia's cultural, social, and economic diversity, the application of global principles of sustainable education varies widely across different regions. Using a qualitative approach, the study examines the experi- ences and perspectives of educators, policymakers, and community members engaged in sustainable education initiatives.2 Data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions in both urban and rural educational settings. The findings indicate that while sustainable education is gaining traction in Indonesia, its practical implementation remains uneven. Urban schools benefit from better resources and infrastructure, allowing more effective integration of sustainable education into their curricula. However, rural schools face considerable obstacles, including limited access to educational materials, inadequate teacher training, and insufficient cur- riculum adaptation to local needs. Despite these challenges, several community-led initiatives demonstrate the potential for advancing sustainable education when adapted to local contexts and supported by collaborative efforts among schools, government, and local com- munities. This study concludes that fostering these partnerships is crucial to overcoming the barriers to widespread adoption of sustaina- ble education across Indonesia.
