STATUS OF HEALTH PROGRAMS, ACTIVITIES AND CHALLENGES EXPERIENCED OF PERSONS DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY (PDLS) IN THE CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN METRO MANILA
The health and well-being of Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in the Philippines are the focus of this nursing research. PDLs encompass individuals in detention facilities awaiting trial, serving sentences, or under various custody forms, reflecting an international commitment to human rights within criminal justice systems. This study evaluates cell conditions, food quality, cleanliness, and overall well-being among PDLs while exploring international best practices to enhance their living conditions and mental health. Concerns such as elevated suicide rates and drug misuse underscore the critical mental health challenges faced by PDLs, exacerbated by prolonged incarceration. By providing insights into these issues, the research aims to inform prison administrators and policymakers on improving PDLs' well-being and treatment. The ultimate goal is to promote a humane and rights-based criminal justice system in the Philippines, thereby enhancing the health and quality of life for PDLs. Emphasizing the importance of comprehensive policies addressing health and well-being across structural and social dimensions, this study advocates for creating a supportive prison environment that prioritizes PDLs' health and facilitates their successful reintegration into society.
