Reflection of Humanism in Selected Short Stories of O. Henry
O. Henry, the pen name of William Sydney Porter, is renowned for his short stories that blend humor, irony, and sentimentality. A deeper analysis of his work reveals a strong undercurrent of humanism—a philosophy that emphasizes the value, dignity, and agency of human beings. This paper explores the reflection of humanistic ideals in select stories including The Gift of the Magi, The Last Leaf, and A Retrieved Reformation. Through an exploration of character development, moral dilemmas, and narrative style, this research highlights O. Henry’s subtle yet powerful affirmation of human values.
