Structural Analysis and Design of a Cantilevered Flood Mitigation Wall in Dela Paz, San Simon, Pampanga
Flooding poses a significant threat to communities worldwide, particularly in areas exposed to extremeweather and vulnerable river systems. In Dela Paz, San Simon, Pampanga, the existing concrete hollowblock (CHB) river wall has proven inadequate against the forces exerted by the nearby river, especiallyduring typhoons such as Carina. This study focuses on the structural analysis and design of a cantileveredflood mitigation wall to replace the failed CHB structure. Considering the site’s curved river geometry andhydrological conditions, the design integrates a 0.5-meter freeboard in compliance with ASCE 24-14standards, resulting in a total wall height of 1.4 meters from natural ground level (NGL). Given thepresence of groundwater, hydrostatic and lateral earth pressures were analyzed separately for dry andsaturated soils. Using QuickRWall software and adhering to ACI 318-14 provisions, the design wasevaluated for external stability (sliding, overturning, and bearing capacity) and structural integrity(moment and shear resistance). Results confirm that the proposed cantilever wall satisfies all safetycriteria, demonstrating structural adequacy under the given load conditions. The final design offers areliable and sustainable solution for mitigating flood risks and reinforcing the riverbank inDela Paz, San Simon.
