Science With a Purpose: An In-Depth Look at the MATATAG Curriculum for Grades 4 to 7
This work provides an evaluation of the MATATAG curriculum’s science education framework as implemented for Grades 4 to 7 in the Philippines. It presents an informative analysis of the curriculum in several aspects including learning competencies, performance standards, topic coverage, and assessment methods among others concerning inclusivity, use of technology, environmental education, and so on. Thus, integrating educational theories and practices that are available, the study points out the pros and the cons of the curriculum and reaffirms the acceptance of the concept of scientific learning but calls for its more extensive and appropriate application to the class. Further, the curriculum development proposals consist of revising assessment indicators, deepening project work, balancing standards for performance expectations, and the use of information technology. Other issues raised in this paper include asking for analytical skills and providing group work to enhance the learners’ capacity, as well as the inculcation of the relevance of education to employment opportunities in the respective field of science. In conclusion, the highlights of the analysis indicate that the MATATAG curriculum can be enhanced, through strategic changes, to equip the learners with the necessary skills to tackle modern science issues more responsibly about their society and environment.
