Role of Nanotechnology in Food Packaging

The food packaging industry is undergoing a number of scientific advancements in response to consumer trends and preferences. The current focus is on giving food a smart level of protection while enhancing its aesthetic appeal to consumers. Eco-friendly biodegradable materials have garnered significant attention in recent years as a substitute for non-biodegradable materials. As nanotechnology can address the shortcomings of current approaches, it is thriving and proving to be a great addition to the industry of packaging. Numerous nanomaterials have been investigated and tested in the production of packaging materials. This review focusses on the use of green technology to synthesize nanoparticles and the development of nanopackaging of which includes smart, bio-based and smart packaging. These nanomaterials enhance the water and oxygen barriers and mechanical strength of food packaging. Some additional advantages include light blocking and antibacterial capabilities. Further, efforts are required to validate the green technology on a larger scale and to guarantee the stability and long-term storage of sensing elements in field settings.
