GFZ Global Ionospheric Disturbances Monitoring System: Initial Results and Effects of Scintillations on GNSS Signals at Different Frequencies

The analysis of ionospheric disturbances is crucial for enhancing the precision of space geodetic applications. It has recently gained significant use in early warning systems and in evaluating the impact of natural disasters like geomagnetic storms, earthquakes, and tsunamis. To monitor ionospheric disturbances across various regions, the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is establishing a global network of high-rate GNSS stations, operating at a frequency of 50 Hz. This report introduces this monitoring system and presents initial results from stations near the magnetic equator. It will focus on analyzing the impact of ionospheric disturbances on the quality of GNSS signal observations, including using statistical algorithms to compare the effects of scintillations on the GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo navigation systems operating at different frequencies (L1, L2, L5).
