An Error Analysis of EFL Learners’ Pronunciation of English Vowels With a Special Reference to Terminale A4 Students

Abstract: The present study aims at identifying English vowels pronunciation errors and suggesting remedial work to solve those difficulties. It sought to identify the most problematic vowel phonemes for students; then find out the sources of the errors that occur and finally suggest remedial work. To conduct this study, an oral test stood as the instrument, and an audio recording was used to collect the data from twenty (20) Terminale ‘A4’ students, analyzed under the framework of the Error Analysis theory. The results of the research revealed that all monophthongs and diphthongs are problematic for students, but with a degree of gravity which varies from one phoneme to another. Students’ errors are attributed to word spellings, the influence of Moore and French, and the inconsistency of English vowels. It is suggested that focusing on the observed errors during the teaching process can help students improve their pronunciation performance. Key words: Pronunciation, Vowels, Error Analysis, phonemes, language acquisition.
