Earning and Returning: Emigrant Registration and Migration Statistics in the Americas (1857–1911)

This article explores the development of early migration statistics, particularly focusing on the chronology of registering emigrants at American ports. It examines when the American states, which identified strongly as immigrant nations, began to officially recognize return migration. By comparing data collection procedures from six states (Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, Cuba, the United States, and Canada) and drawing on official statistical surveys published between 1857 and 1911, the article reveals how comparatively late officials began to account for temporary labour migration. Despite transnational knowledge transfers and the increasing standardization of migration figures, the chronologies of registry differed substantially, with South American statistics on emigration preceding those of North America. The study challenges one-way migration narratives, underscoring the complexities and significance of return migration along with inter-American migration as a new form of global mobility for workers around 1900.
