Teaching for Critical and Responsible Citizenship

For the 2022 University of Potsdam (UP) Summer School on Teaching the SDGs we led the design and teaching of an interdisciplinary study group, or mini-course, on Engaging with global citizenship: Interdisciplinary approaches to teaching that responds to multiple cultures and migrations. Chapter 5 in this volume discusses this class more generally. In this article we discuss: 1) the evolution of our partnership; 2) ideas of critical literacy that informed this project; 3) how we designed our study group to explore – through modules and in-person activities – histories of migration, ideas of nation and identity, and important considerations for teachers of both language and history; and 4) assessment of the outcomes. We argue that language and history teaching and learning play complementary roles in global citizenship education, particularly the development of critical literacies, and we offer ideas for how teachers can bring these disciplines together.
