The academic consequences of student arrests
This study investigates the academic impact of student arrests on GPA at a research-intensive university in the Midwest. Utilizing a longitudinal, multilevel design, the research analyzes data from 842 students arrested during the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 academic years. The findings reveal that while there is a slight drop in GPA during the semester of the arrest, students generally recover academically in subsequent semesters. The severity of the arrest or sanction did not significantly impact GPA. Additionally, the study highlights the differential impact on specific student groups, such as first-year students and male students. Implications for practice for institutions of higher education are outlined.
